Dr. Nupoor Jaiswal Answers Frequently Asked Patient Questions
Gynecologist at Shubham Hospital, Jankipuram, Lucknow
As women’s health can be a sensitive subject, it’s common for women to have important questions but feel embarrassed or uncertain about asking them. To put a stop to the embarrassment, we asked Dr. Nupoor Jaiswal, an experienced gynaecologist at Shubham Hospital, Jankipuram, for her answers to the most commonly asked questions from patients.
Whether you are a young woman starting to understand your body or someone looking for answers about fertility, the menstrual cycle or even menopause, you will find comfort and care in the answers below.
❓ 1. What is a “normal” menstrual cycle?
Dr. Nupoor:
A normal cycle occurs between 21 to 35 days, and the bleeding usually lasts between 3–7 days. Minor variations from cycle to cycle are normal, with the exception of heavy bleeding, severe pain, or missed periods, as these can signal a problem that requires follow-up.
❓ 2. Is it okay to delay my period using pills for an event or travel?
Dr. Nupoor:
Occasionally yes, but only if directly supervised by a medical doctor. The regular use of pill to alter hormones without consulting a medical doctor can lead to irregular cycles, hormone imbalance and cause complications in the future.
❓ 3. How do I know if I have PCOS or hormonal imbalance?
Dr. Nupoor:
Common signs include irregular periods, acne, weight gain, excess facial hair, and difficulty conceiving. A combination of blood tests and ultrasound can confirm PCOS. It’s a manageable condition with lifestyle changes and, if needed, medication.
❓ 4. At what age should a girl first visit a gynecologist?
Dr. Nupoor:
About 13–15 years, particularly if she has any questions around her periods, or has heavy bleeding or very severe cramps. Early counselling will guide awareness and healthy habits.
❓ 5. What is the right time to plan a pregnancy?
Dr. Nupoor:
Biologically, the mid-late 20's to early 30's is the best for pregnancy. However, more importantly, you want to be physically, emotionally, and medically prepared. Preconception counseling can help couples understand fertility and plan to get pregnant and raise a child in a safe manner.
❓ 6. How often should women get a Pap smear or cervical screening?
Dr. Nupoor:
Every woman needs at least 1 Pap smear starting at age 21, and then every 3 years in order to check for cervical changes while still safe and curable; Pap smears detect cervical changes before they progress into a serious condition.
❓ 7. How can I manage painful periods naturally?
Dr. Nupoor:
-
Use a heating pad
-
Do some gentle yoga/stretching
-
Drink herbal teas like ginger or chamomile
-
Eat wholesome, balanced and anti-inflammatory meals
If your pain becomes debilitating or continues to interfere with daily life, then it is important to rule out conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids.
❓ 8. When should I worry about irregular periods?
Dr. Nupoor:
If you are missing periods for longer than 2-3 months, having extremely heavy periods, or having bleeding between periods, you should seek a gynaecologist's advice. An early diagnosis helps prevent further complications.
